Other Costs/Expenses

A few other items may be necessary to fulfill your degree requirements. Most important is a dependable, easily accessible computer. Other costs you might incur include:

  • The non-refundable application fee (except when a cohort is canceled due to insufficient interest)
  • Textbooks (App State Online students are not eligible to participate in University Bookstore's textbook rental program)
  • Course-specific materials as specified by the faculty teaching the course
  • The cost of required admission tests (e.g. GRE or MAT for admission to graduate programs, the Praxis I and Praxis II for teacher education majors and licensure candidates)
  • Some online courses may require proctored exams. Please visit UNC Online to search available exam proctors near you.
  • A reliable, high-speed internet connection
  • Unique, specific software or hardware (App State Online students have access to some software with the use of the university credentials. Visit the UDesk for more information.
  • Parking fee, if required by the host site
  • The graduation fee
  • The cost of the cap and gown, if participating in the ceremony

Residency For Tuition Purposes

Veterans Benefit/Military Tuition

If you are a veteran and or a dependent, you may qualify for in-state residency after initial classification of out-of-state by providing additional information through the Section 702 Veterans "Choice Act". To qualify under this act, you must be a service member or dependent of service member; must enroll in an Institution of Higher Learning within three years of discharge from a period of active duty service of 90 days or more. You must also be eligible for and receiving the Montgomery GI Bill or Post 9/11 GI Bill. If you believe you might qualify for this benefit, please review Military Benefits.

Dual enrollment

Students who take a combination of community college and Appalachian State University courses in the same semester may be eligible to apply for financial aid through the Appalachian Learning Alliance Consortium Agreement.
