Internship Authorized States

Every state has the authority to regulate which postsecondary institutions offer education within its boundaries, including internships, field experiences, clinical placements, and practica. A student's ability to participate in an internship is dependent upon the laws in that state.

Appalachian State University will continue to work with states to secure proper authorizations, to the extent feasible and within our available resources, in order to provide the greatest flexibility for our students who wish to complete educational activities. In the meantime, Appalachian must remain an institution of integrity by complying with the laws of other states.

Appalachian is NOT authorized in the following states; therefore, internships, field experiences, clinicals or practica may be prohibited in these states at this time. Please note, this information is subject to change. Contact your internship coordinator to discuss alternatives that might meet your needs.

Internship Disclosures for Colorado and South Carolina

Students are required to obtain worker's compensation coverage in the following two states in order for students to complete their internship, field experience, clinical placement, or practica within the state.

Colorado

Per Colorado law, students are required to have worker's compensation insurance when completing an internship, field experience, clinical placement, or practica within the state. Appalachian State University is not permitted under North Carolina law to provide or cover the cost of our students' worker's compensation coverage. Some Colorado host sites are willing to work with students to ensure coverage, at their own expense, through the Colorado host site or through a private carrier, but this is not guaranteed.

Note: Late internship submissions may not be accommodated. If late submission occurs, it is recommended that students have an additional internship arranged outside of this state.

South Carolina

South Carolina facilities have begun to require students to have worker's compensation insurance when completing an internship, field experience, clinical placement, or practica in a clinical or governmental facility within the state. Appalachian State University is not permitted under North Carolina law to provide or cover the cost of our students' worker's compensation coverage. Students interning in South Carolina must work with the host site to determine if worker's compensation insurance is required and what options they may have to obtain worker's compensation insurance, at their own expense.

Note: Late internship submissions may not be accommodated. If late submission occurs, it is recommended that students have an additional internship arranged outside of this state.
