Internships in programs leading to professional licensure
All host states require verification of internships, field experiences, clinicals or practica by agencies or boards responsible for professional requirements in fields requiring licensure or certification for practice. Please contact the appropriate agency/board.
Contact information for the agency/board can be found on the Professional Licensure webpage. For auditing purposes, if approval is granted, document conversation(s) or materials into the departmental student record.
For additional resources, please see the Internships Faculty and Staff Resources webpage.
The National Council - State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA) is an agreement among member states, districts and territories that establish comparable national standards for interstate offering of postsecondary distance education courses and programs. It is intended to make it easier for students to take online courses offered by postsecondary institutions based in another state. In addition, SARA enables interstate placement of interns with a couple caveats.
- Large numbers of interns, more than 10, in a single site must be approved in advanced.
- Programs that lead to licensure or a similar credential may be subject to a local license board for internships placements and/or educational offerings. License board information can be found here.
NC-SARA covers study away experiences, short courses, or seminars as long as the instruction takes no more than 20 classroom hours in one six-month period. Additionally, a full-term course in which the instructor and students do not physically meet more than two times, totaling less than six hours, is also covered under NC-SARA.
NC-SARA covers class field trips across state lines among member states. To verify member states, see the SARA States & Institutions map.
